Pharrell Compares Kendrick Lamar To The Black Dillon

It's already been almost two weeks since Arsenio Hall's late night return to television debut and so far he's ahead of his competitors including Jay Leno. Hall has had several guests on his show like comedian/actor Chris Tucker, actress Angela Bassett, rapper Mac Miller and former NBA legend Magic Johnson.

Tuesday, September 17th, Kendrick Lamar performed as well as discussed his childhood and the back lash his verse on Big Sean's "Control".

Lamar wasn't phased by the criticism and dis tracks over his verse in the song "Control". According to him, it's just rap and he's having fun. Giving a shout out to Big Sean and Jay Electron Kendrick said his verse in "Control" is a way to challenge youself and express yourself on record.

When asked about the term black hippy Lamar said it's a group that has their own sound and style and who is not confined to what the industry and radio wants you to do. Black Hippy consists of Kendrick, Schoolboy Q, AbSoul and Jay Rock.

The West Coast rapper discussed the meaning behind the song "Swimming Pools". He said it's about expressing alcohol awareness rather u identify with being an alcoholic or not. Kendrick said he grew up partying with his parents which caused him not to indulge in drinking nor smoking marijuana. He said he had his share of experiences during his childhood.

Kendrick said he don't want to be identified like most rappers as the partying type.

"I'm not afraid to put it out there. I'm not afraid to look in the mirror and I'm not following no trends. This is who I am", Kendrick said in regards to not following the typical rapper who likes to party.

Kendrick was asked what kind of music he likes to listen to while riding and he said he grew up on gangster rap but he enjoys listening to old school music from artists like the Isley Brothers and the late Marvin Gaye.

When Hall asked Lamar about Pharrell calling him the Black Dillon he agreed saying he is a legend who voices his opinion when he says something.

"If I'm going to do this I'm going to say something. It's not just going to be rap about the verses," Kendrick explained.

In regards to the culture in hip hop in LA the "Poetic Justice" rapper said he wants to keep his foot in the game and bring the energy back into the world like 2Pac and Dr. Dre.

Speaking of Dre and the late Pac Kendrick also recalled the time his father picked him up and took him to see Dre and Pac while making the video to the hit "California Love". He said he was one of the kids in the video!
